Sounds Easy

Classic artists perform classic songs from the ‘Great American Songbook’ and more

David Mann presents an hour of sounds on the easy side every Sunday at 11.00pm on South Norfolk Radio (repeated at 5.00pm on Tuesday teatimes).

The songs can be over 100 years old or bang up to date, with the recordings ranging from the 1930s right up to today too, but all are great songs performed by artists at the top of their game, with the accent often on recordings from the 50s to the 70s. All the big names are here – Sinatra, Crosby, Cole, Garland, Davis, Martin, Fitzgerald, Day – plus many less-heard but no less worthy purveyors of ‘our kind of music’ as well as some of the artists currently recording and keeping the flame alive for a good song, expertly performed. As well as the vocalists, we must mention all the superbly skilled arrangers and conductors who crafted so many memorable settings for the vocal talent on display.

‘Sounds Easy’ was originally created by consummate broadcaster and music expert, the late Alan Dell, and our revival of his much-missed BBC Radio 2 series, which after Alan’s passing was taken over by the equally well-respected David Jacobs, includes some of the regular features of the original programmes including the Piano Parlour and the Crosby Corner, and the weekly finale features Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra.
